Wine of the Week

Barón de Chirel Verdejo Viñas Centenarias 2021 [White]
Producer: Herederos del Marqués de Riscal
Region: Vino de la tierra

100% verdejo from ungrafted pre-philoxera vines (100+ years) in the province of Segovia, at altitude (900 meters) & planted on sandy granite soils. Only free run juice is used, nurtured on the lees after fermentation in large wooden vats for 6 months.

Serious stuff, beautifully made with great intensity: stone fruit & dry flowers/herbs backed up by a touch of alluvial minerality.
Rich and concentrated, fresh & mouthfilling with superb balance and a finish that goes on and on. A truly outstanding bottle of wine.

Bottled under the IGP Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León denomination rather than DO Rueda. Lack of "typicity" perhaps?

A note to our readers:
I've used SRP, which is the normal price in Spain expressed in US dollars [Low=$5-9, Medium=$10-18, High=$19+]. The wines selected are usually moderately priced and generally exported around the world. Some exceptions happen...
