Castillo de Almansa 2001 [Red]
Producer: Bodegas Piqueras
Region: DO Almansa

A couple of large co-ops make for a majority of the relatively unknown DO Almansa region's production. Bodegas Piqueras makes this cost-effective, unoaked Castillo de Almansa Colección 2001 from 100% Garnacha Tintorera [aka Alicante Bouschet]. A rich, potent young red that's good on its own and should also make for a super sangría.

Deep dark purple color. Powerful up-front fruit aromas [blackberry, raspberry] over a pleasant flowery background. The palate's dominated by rich berry fruit with crisp acidity and a nice fruit-driven finish. Very good value.

A note to our readers:
I've used SRP, which is the normal price in Spain expressed in US dollars [Low=$5-9, Medium=$10-18, High=$19+]. The wines selected are usually moderately priced and generally exported around the world. Some exceptions happen...
