Wine of the Week

Banzao Mencía de San Pedro de Oll 2018 [Red]
Producer: Banzao
Region: DO Bierzo

100% mencía grapes from very old vines, once abandoned en El Bierzo's Valle de Ancares, now restored by winemaker Silvia Marrao Barreiro for the Banzao project.

Clean & fresh with dark & red berry fruit aromas, a bit vegetal with a mineral/saline background.
Blackberry & cherry flavors, a touch herbaceous, spice (vanilla), nicely balanced, user friendly tannins. A wine to enjoy.

A most interesting wine, and a good example of what Bierzo & mencía can offer. It grows in the glass: mencías typically need some air to show their best.

A note to our readers:
I've used SRP, which is the normal price in Spain expressed in US dollars [Low=$5-9, Medium=$10-18, High=$19+]. The wines selected are usually moderately priced and generally exported around the world. Some exceptions happen...
