Wine of the Week

Vega Sicilia "Único" 1994 [Red]
Producer: Vega Sicilia
Region: DO Ribera del Duero

Mostly tempranillo (80%) with 13% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot and 2% "other" (malbec?), nurtured 6+ years in a combination of large oak vats and oak barrels, finally 3 years in bottle before release. Bottled in 2000, released 2003.

Unforgettable nose with great depth & complexity: berries (red & black), orange peel, cedar wood, spices (cinnamon/nutmeg), minerals, the list goes on...
A perfect combination of weight, freshness and elegance on the palate: blackberries, cigar box, minerals, spices, polished tannins, a never-ending finish. Still seems very young. Parker wrote "drink 2019 to 2040" - agreed. Wine doesn't get much better than this!

Decided to wrap up 2020 (and celebrate a family Christmas) with something very special. It was.

A note to our readers:
I've used SRP, which is the normal price in Spain expressed in US dollars [Low=$5-9, Medium=$10-18, High=$19+]. The wines selected are usually moderately priced and generally exported around the world. Some exceptions happen...
