Wine of the Week

Áster Crianza 2015 [Red]
Producer: Áster
Region: DO Ribera del Duero

100% tempranillo, maloláctic in barrels, nurtured 22 months in French oak barrels (70% new), bottled May 2018. True to La Rioja Alta, SA's style: lengthy (but never abusive) oak aging and plenty of time in bottle before release.

Plums & blueberry, subtle spice (nutmeg/cinnamon), a touch of dried flowers/leaves, and a hint of rose petals.
Serious tannins, still showing a bit of "bite", but with fruit enough balance things out. Fresh on the palate, smoothed out quickly in the glass, just needed a little air. Oak stays in the background, doesn't interfere. Serious wine, well made, good length, should cellar well. Excellent value from a top vintage.

A note to our readers:
I've used SRP, which is the normal price in Spain expressed in US dollars [Low=$5-9, Medium=$10-18, High=$19+]. The wines selected are usually moderately priced and generally exported around the world. Some exceptions happen...
