  • Location: North, banks of the Ebro River
  • Sub-regions:Rioja Oriental(Baja), Rioja Alta, and Rioja Alavesa
  • Rioja wines can now include the name of the village/municipality to the front label.
  • The new Viñedo singular (unique vineyards) rule now allows for specific vineyard designation (like Burgundy "crus").
  • Vineyards: 65,326 hectares (161,355 acres)
  • 2017 Production: 250,200,000 liters
  • Wineries: 607
  • Growers: 15,240

Authorized Grape Varieties

  • Reds: tempranillo, garnacha, graciano, mazuelo, maturana tinta, maturano & monastrell.
  • Whites: viura (macabeo), malvasía (alarije), garnacha blanca, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, verdejo, maturana blanca, tempranillo blanco & torrontés.

Typical wines:

  • Quality reds - Crianza, Reserva & Gran Reserva
  • Young reds - "Sin Crianza" or "Vino del Año"
  • Rosés - 10% of the production
  • Whites - 10% of the production
