The new D.O. rules define Rioja Calificada, this means that all wines labeled "Rioja Calificada" must be bottled in the Rioja district.
D.O. Rioja Calificada
- Location: North, banks of the Ebro River
- Sub-regions:Rioja Baja, Rioja Alta, and Rioja Alavesa
- Vineyards: 55,170 hectares (136,270 acres)
- 1999 Production: 1,954,837 hectoliters
Authorized Grape Varieties
- Reds: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo
- Whites: Viura, Malvasía Riojana, and Garnacha Blanca
Typical wines:
- Quality reds - Crianza, Reserva & Gran Reserva
- Young reds - "Sin Crianza" or "Vino del Año"
- Light reds - "Clarete"
- Rosés - 10% of the production
- Whites - 10% of the production
