"Sibaritas" Magazine's Wine Awards for 1998
May 1999

"Sibaritas" magazine's presented one of the country's most prestigious awards for Spanish wines. The selection is the "critics' choice" - led by José Peñín, noted wine critic and the magazine's editor, 30 odd wine critics and journalists form a panel and award three prizes: the previous year's very best wine, best winery and top new wine. Interestingly enough, the overall winner was a dessert wine made from the Pedro Ximénez grape from the lesser known Montilla-Moriles region, while both the top winery and "revelation" wine are non-DO contenders.

Here's the list:
And some of the finalists:

Top 3 Whites

Top 6 Reds
Top 3 Cava (bubblies)
Top 3 fortified wines

During and after the presentation of the awards, the press and other invitees got a chance to sample the winning wines and many of the runners-up as well. It is an excellent selection and the names here are a worthwhile addition to any wine cellar.
