There
are an abundance of ventas, bars and restaurants in the area, with a varied
selection of foods on offer. The area is famed for both its fish and game foods
as well as local wines and sherries. Prices vary, but in general rates are very
competitive, providing good value for money.
In La Muela there is a very popular, good value for money, Italian restaurant
called Il Forno. The menu is varied and they also provide a take away service.
In the summer and weekends, it is important to be prompt and arrive early as
they do no take bookings and they are full within five minutes of opening,
In the centre of La Muela there are two ventas, at venta Rufino's they are very
friendly, have English menus and excellent local food is prepared at a reasonable
price in a wonderful atmosphere. Secreto prok is a favourite. Opposite is Tres
Carrilas, which is more traditionally Spanish where they have excellent tapas
and it is an ideal place to listen to the 'locals talking in their own dialect.
One of the most popular restaurants, a ten minute drive away, is La Gitana.
It is on the edge of an industrial estate and therefore does not look very inviting,
but once inside you realise what a hidden jewel you have found. It is spacious,
clean and the staff are very friendly. They have a very selection of food from
Partridge to Venison, or from wild boar to corn fed chicken as well as a wide
variety of fish dishes. We recommend the Vina Lucia red wine, it is very good
and a reasonable price. They have an English menu as well as speaking some English
In the adjacent village to La Muela, La Patria, there is a Danish restaurant,
a pricey restaurant at hotel Sinduhra and a relatively new Spanish restaurant
'Jardine de la Partia', that has English entertainment on a Saturday night.
For that very special occasion, the restaurant at Venta Pinta is at the top.
It has curved wooden ceilings carved from highly polished chestnut. Although
the menu is not inexpensive, the quality and variety of food and wine is of
the highest standard. In Vejer there are many restaurants and tapas bars. One
that is popular with our guests is The Califa hotel, in the main square of the
old town, which is English owned and offers an expensive Moroccan menu. It is
always busy with tourists and the food tends to be good. Guests recommend booking
ahead. Other restaurants and bars in Vejer include Besaro, Trafalgar restaurant,
Meson Judenia as well as La Tajea in Santa Lucia.
In Conil, as Vejer, there are numerous eating establishments and ones that are
highly recommended include La Fontanilla, on the beach front, Tascon de la prensa
in the middle of the old town and Casa Manolo.
On the beach front at EL Palmar, La Torre restaurant is the only building on
the beach side of the road and is a super place to watch the sun set as you
eat fish caught in the Gulf of Cadiz.
Travelling to Tarifa, El Badulake and restaurant Melor are places to visit.
On the way, just before Balonia hotel San Jose de Vale does an excellent breakfast
and lunch.
In Cadiz near the harbour a highly recommended modern restaurant is Achuri,
Calle Plocia. It provides Basque-Andalusian cuisine : Tuna dishes, barbel hake,
'tocino de cielo' pudding. Fine red and white wines from the region.
